According to this current event article, Chilean adolescents are the least active within South America. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently dove into studying 72,000 Latin American, Asian, Africa, and Middle Eastern teens finding that 23.9% of boys and 28.7% of girls do not participate in enough physical activity. However, the Uruguay country had the best average activity for boys (4 days per week), and India had the most active girls (3 days per week). On the bottom of the board come Venezuela and Chile, with an average of just two days a week for boys and one for girls. So, what are these Chilean teens doing when they aren't participating in physical activity? The WHO also measured the number of hours teens spend on stationary activity. The Caymen Islands lead this category with 58% for boys and 64% for girls. They found that 40% of Chilean boys and 52% of Chilean girls spend more than three hours in front of the TV. These habits are the direct reason the obesity rate in Chile has increased in past years. A health professional says that these unhealthy habits are the result of the pressure to receive academic excellence and ignoring the need for physical activity. Unfortunately, if this continues Chile will have a higher number of men suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes by age 30.
